UNC Ophthalmology Team First to Describe Glaucoma Incidence in Africa
Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and affects people of African descent disproportionately. A team of researchers from UNC Ophthalmology has published findings in the March 2019 issue of Ophthalmology demonstrating the highest incidence of glaucoma in the world in Ghana, West Africa.

Physician Engagement in Quality & Safety: An Orientation to Clinical Improvement
Since 2014, over 800 residents, fellows, faculty and staff have participated in a six-hour orientation to clinical improvement and patient safety called Physician Engagement in Quality and Safety (PEQS). Designed for resident physicians by UNC’s Institute for Healthcare Quality Improvement (IHQI), PEQS is required for medical residents and appropriate for anyone seeking a foundation in clinical improvement and patient safety.

First North American Hidradenitis Suppurativa Clinical Management Guidelines Published
Developed as a joint effort of the US and Canadian Hidradenitis Suppurativa Foundations, the first clinical management guidelines for the treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa were published online in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology on March 11. The international effort for guideline development was led by Christopher Sayed, Associate Professor in the UNC Department of Dermatology.

Kaylene King, a third-year Doctor of Audiology student in the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences, will present at the 16th Symposium on Cochlear Implants in Children, to be held in July 2019 and hosted by the American Cochlear Implant Alliance. King also received a 2019 student scholarship award.

Enders named CEO at UNC Lenoir: Strickler to serve as Interim President of Chatham Hospital
Robert A. “Bob” Enders, Jr. has been named CEO of UNC Lenoir Health Care in Kinston, following the retirement of UNC Lenoir’s previous CEO, Gary E. Black. Enders will transition from his current role as President at Chatham Hospital to his new role at UNC Lenoir by mid-April. As Enders transitions to CEO of UNC Lenoir, Jeff Strickler, Vice President of UNC Hospitals Hillsborough Campus, will begin serving as interim President of Chatham Hospital.
