Each year the Rheumatology Research Foundation (RRF) selects one researcher to receive the award and present at its memorial lectureship during the annual American College of Rheumatology (ACR)/Association of Rheumatology Professionals (ARP) meeting – held this year in Atlanta.

The award is provided to a recipient based on criteria that includes their being recognized as “an outstanding investigator in rheumatology,” as well as additional criteria such as “research and scholarship,” and “academic and professional leadership.”

Dr. Loeser’s lecture discussed the evolution of osteoarthritis from an inevitable result of aging and injury often characterized as, “wear and tear,” to a complex biological condition that affects the entire joint structure, resulting in pain and disability. In the lecture he stated, “We have developed a much more complete understanding of the biology of osteoarthritis, including the recognition that there is an important role for inflammation.”

He added that, “There are clearly a number of different inflammatory factors that are promoting degradation of joint tissues in OA. And we are developing new targets for therapy.”
