Read a memo from Dr. Julie Byerley about the work of the Professionalism Executive Committee.

In line with the CPR2 initiative we wanted to highlight the Professionalism Executive Committee, for the purpose of ensuring that members of our medical center community are aware of some of the efforts “behind the scenes” to support civility.

The Professionalism Executive Committee was created in 2012 and approved by the UNC Health Care Board as a Peer Review Committee. The Committee focuses on the medical center and is comprised of UNC School of Medicine and UNC Health Care System senior leaders. The Committee is charged to (1) Oversee and coordinate the evaluation, monitoring, and corrective actions related to alleged breaches of SOM clinical faculty professional conduct utilizing multiple data sources including data from patients, medical students, resident physicians, and UNC Hospitals’ Risk Management Department, as well as information from investigations stemming from reported violations of UNC Hospitals’ Code of Conduct policy; and (2) Consult with and support SOM Clinical Department Chairs in developing effective corrective actions for breaches of faculty professionalism.

Typically, the work of the Professionalism Executive Committee is kept confidential. The PEC is co-chaired by Julie Byerley and Tom Ivester.
