The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has selected 45 doctoral students and their advisers to advance diversity and inclusion in the sciences. From the UNC School of Medicine, graduate student Hernán Méndez and his advisor Kathleen Caron, PhD, and graduate student Sofia Neira and her advisor Thomas Kash, PhD, were named Gilliam Fellows.

Jasmine Johnson, MD, third-year Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellow and clinical instructor in the UNC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, dedicates her research efforts on Black maternal health disparities and quality improvement efforts to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity.

Nathan (Nate) Thomas, PhD, has been named Vice Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the UNC School of Medicine. Thomas will join the School of Medicine leadership effective March 16, 2020.

Paul Godley, MD, PhD, MPP, UNC School of Medicine’s Vice Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, and the Rush S. Dickson Distinguished Professor of Hematology/Oncology in the Department of Medicine, passed away Sunday, March 31. The funeral service will be held Saturday, April 6.

In a continued effort to prepare UNC medical students to provide comprehensive and compassionate care to the people of North Carolina and beyond, the School of Medicine has established a new sexual and gender minority (SGM) health curriculum. Emily Vander Schaaf, MD, MPH, assistant professor in the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, will lead the initiative.
