UNC Lineberger’s Claire Dees, MD, is one of the country’s top 27 breast oncologists, according to Forbes magazine.

Dr. David A. Ontjes, who served as Chair of the Department of Medicine from 1981 to 1989, died on May 7. Ontjes specialized in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, at the University Presbyterian Church, 209 East Franklin Street in Chapel Hill.

Luis A. Diaz, MD, C.E. Wheeler, Jr. Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology, has announced that he will be stepping down from the position, effective Dec. 31, after serving in the role for more than 16 years.

As part of the UNC School of Medicine's Spring Alumni Weekend, the annual Distinguished Medical Alumni and Faculty Awards were presented. This year's Distinguished Medical Alumni honorees were Leon Herndon, MD, Kate Queen, MD, and Lane Ormand, MD. This year's Distinguished Medical Faculty honoree was Thomas Griggs, MD.
