Blood-Cell Consortium members from the UNC Department of Genetics, Drs. Yun Li (associate professor), Laura Raffield (assistant professor), Karen Mohlke (professor) and Cassandra Spracklen (former postdoctoral fellow) are co-authors on two large studies focused on the genetics of blood cell traits.

Led by UNC School of Medicine neuroscientist Hyejung Won, PhD, researchers created H-MAGMA, a computational tool that improves current technology used to link non-coding genetic variants to the genes associated with diseases through genome-wide association studies.

Adding genomic sequencing results to traditional newborn screening means a baby could potentially test positive for numerous conditions that might not develop within their lifetime. A UNC School of Medicine study proposed a method for how to responsibly determine which types of conditions to include in testing and potentially return to parents.

The study, co-led by Patrick Sullivan of UNC and Naomi Wray of the University of Queensland, is the largest genome-wide association study to date of genetic risk factors for major depression.
