The UNC MD/PhD Program received five more years of T32 funding from the NIH/NIGMS as a Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), securing NIH funding through June 2029 and increasing the number of MD/PhD training slots from 16 to 21.

Klaus Hahn, PhD, the Ronald G. Thurman Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology at the UNC School of Medicine, will co-lead this Chan Zuckerberg Initiative project with colleagues at Duke University and North Carolina State University.

Stephen Schworer, MD, PhD, will use the award to better understand the biology of small airways disease in asthma and provide a foundation for mechanistic studies that will inform new therapeutic targets for the condition.

Katie Baldwin, PhD, assistant professor of cell biology and physiology in the UNC School of Medicine, received $1.5 million from the NIH to study white brain matter and its contribution to brain development, function, and debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer’s and multiple sclerosis.

Margaret Kasaro, MMed OBGYN, and others at the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health have received a ~$3-million award from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to improve access to portable ultrasounds in routine antenatal care in Zambia.

The Tobacco Prevention and Evaluation program (TPEP) in the UNC School of Medicine has been awarded a two-year, $887,431 contract from Juul Settlement funds received by the NC Department of Health and Human Services to better understand electronic cigarette use among our youth and young adults.

The 7.5-million grant from the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases will help researchers pinpoint specific factors that lead to a better immune response through HIV vaccination.
