Joe Piven, MD, the Thomas E. Castelloe Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry, co-presented an overview of autism research in older populations before the US DHHS Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee.

Samuel McLean, MD, MPH, professor in the UNC Department of Psychiatry, is set to launch a new initiative for the purpose of creating interventions to prevent posttraumatic stress, depression, chronic pain, and other severe consequences of trauma.

The $8-million dollar DISENTANGLE initiative, led by Sam McLean, MD, MPH, at the UNC School of Medicine and funded through the U.S. Department of Defense, will leverage the latest data on brain injury biomarkers and clinical observations to prevent and treat severe posttraumatic symptoms.

This three-part series of workshops is for professionals involved with diagnosis and assessment of persons perceived to have autism. The workshop will use a case-oriented style, covering how to use the CARS2 assessment instruments in the diagnoses of autism.

The Foundation of Hope for Research and Treatment of Mental Illness (FOH) will award almost $475,000 to 13 investigators from the UNC Department of Psychiatry at the UNC School of Medicine.

At an awards dinner in New York City, Joseph Piven was named co-recipient of the Ruane Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Research by the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation.
