In this new Vital Signs series, we feature 4th-year med student, Yoshiko Iwai, MS, MFA. Coming to the U.S. from Japan at the age of 16, Yoshiko had the dream of being on the stage showcasing her talent as a dancer, but a series of events led her to pursue her ultimate calling as a doctor.

In this new Vital Signs series, we feature graduate student Elizabeth Minor in the Ehre lab. Inspired by an immunology and cancer immunotherapy class during her time at the University of Virginia, Minor now studies viral challenges like SARS-CoV-2 and cystic fibrosis at the prestigious Marsico Lung Institute/UNC Cystic Fibrosis Center.

In this new Vital Signs series, we feature 3rd-year medical student Blair Byrd, from Snow Camp, North Carolina, who shares about her love for art and what led her to want to become a doctor.

Spending four hours in the chemistry lab as lab partners at Wake Forest University was when it all started. This Valentine’s Day, Cy and Kandis Fogleman, 4th-year medical students at the UNC School of Medicine, share how their relationship blossomed as they learned about each other’s love for rural medicine, discovered shared values, and pursued their personal and career goals.

In this new Vital Signs series, we feature graduate student Autumn Grace Hullings in the Gordon-Larsen lab. Inspired by the emerging field of precision nutrition, Hullings would like to improve dietary guidelines to prevent or reduce cardiometabolic disease.

In this new Vital Signs series, we feature graduate student Aleah Bailey in the Jaspers lab. Ignited by a longtime passion for environmental justice, Bailey seeks to assess how stress and sociodemographic factors affect systemic immune responses to wildfire smoke exposure.

In this new Vital Signs series, we feature 4th-year UNC School of Medicine student Clark Williamson. From Statesville, NC, Clark has always had the ambition to want to help others. After entertaining other career options, he pursued his calling after discovering his passion for medicine.

In this new Vital Signs series, we feature graduate student Andrew Scott Kennedy Jr., in the Thaxton lab. He’s a budding microscopist who plans to dedicate his research career to understanding health and disease to help patients.

Jonathan Schisler, PhD, Leon Coleman, MD, PhD, and Ben Philpot, PhD, at the UNC School of Medicine, were awarded a five-year, $675,000 grant to lead a summer undergraduate experience program promoting neuropharmacology and neurobiological disease research to be conducted by students from underrepresented groups.
