Tips and reminders for year-end giving

With many offices closed for the holidays and deadlines to be met for a donor to receive appropriate tax credit in 2015, UNC Children’s offers these important year-end giving guidelines.

If your year-end plans include making a gift to UNC Children’s, here are a few things to bear in mind to make your gift in time to receive maximum tax benefit.

Giving through UNC Children’s Office of External Affairs

The UNC Children’s Office of External Affairs will be closed Dec. 23 through Dec. 25, Dec. 31, and Jan. 1. Otherwise, supporters are invited to call 919-843-3948 with questions or to make an end-of-year credit card gift by phone.

Credit card gifts by phone
To phone in a credit card gift to UNC Children’s, please call the Office of External Affairs by 5 p.m. on Dec. 30.

To make a gift by phone on Dec. 31, you may call the Medical Foundation office at 919-843-9866 or 919-966-1201 by 2 p.m.

Online giving
The most flexible way to give afterhours is to make an online gift via our secure website. In order to receive tax credit for 2015, the gift must be completed by 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 31.

Gifts by mail
Gifts by check sent by U.S. mail will be credited for 2015 as long as they are postmarked prior to 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 31.

Please note, campus mail will not run on Dec. 31, so any credit card gifts sent via campus mail on this date will not be delivered until Jan. 4 and therefore will not receive credit for 2015.

Stock transfers and wired gifts

Gifts of stock
For stock transactions, electronic transfer must be out of the donor’s control and in the University’s account no later than 4 p.m. on the Dec. 31, which is when the stock market closes for the day. Please talk to your broker about this deadline.

You can also email with your name plus the name and number of the stocks to be transferred which will help identify your gift at this busy time of year, plus help us keep track of what has and hasn’t come in.

Cash wire gifts
Cash wire gifts must be received by the end of business on the Dec. 31, so please discuss this deadline with your bank. You may want to follow up to be sure it will be transferred by this time.

We hope you have a happy holiday season. Thank you for your support!
