The Weigh to Wellness Support Group
Monday, Jan. 10, 6 - 7 p.m.
The Weigh to Wellness Support Group typically meets on the second Monday of each month and is hosted and led by a UNC Wellness Center Weigh to Wellness faculty. This meeting is provides support, education, and physical activity for graduates of the Weigh to Wellness program.

Around the World Chef Series with Mally and Mitra
Wednesday, Jan. 12, from 6 - 8 p.m.
Fees: $10 for members and $15 for non-members
Join us for a healthy, ethnic cooking demonstration featuring Persian cuisine. This program will highlight easy, healthy vegetarian Persian dishes led by Pomegranate Kitchen.
Chef information: Mally’s 15 years experience in the catering industry is a testament to her passion for food. Friends, family and business associates have all deliciously experienced Mally’s talents in the kitchen. Leveraging her individual relationships with our local farmers, Mally will ensure that the freshest, most flavorful ingredients make their way on to your plate. Mitra’s background with diet therapy and nutrition makes her the perfect second half of Pomegranate Kitchen. As our resident “food police,” Mitra will use her nutrition knowledge to make certain that Pom’s menu items are not only delicious, but healthy as well. Mitra’s love of baking led her to serve as a recipe doctor for a prominent bakery in northern California. Mitra’s vivacious personality keeps customers coming back for more!

UNC Stroke Support Group
Wednesday, Jan. 12, 1 - 2 pm
The UNC Health Care Stroke Support Group meets on the second Wednesday of each month. This program is hosted and led by the UNC Department of Neurology will cover topics in stroke recovery for survivors, family, friends, and caregivers.

UNC Cardiac Survivors’ Support Group
Thursday, January 13, 12 - 1:30 p.m.
This is an informal, drop-in discussion group for individuals who have survived a cardiac diagnosis or event. This group is facilitated by Dr. Sandra Freeman, a psychiatrist in private practice in Chapel Hill and a cardiac survivor herself. The group meets at the UNC Wellness Center from noon - 1:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.

The Weigh To Wellness
Thursdays, Jan. 13 - April 7, 2011 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Mondays, Jan. 24 - April 17, 2011 from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m.
Fees: $400 members and $600 non-members
This 12-week weight management program will help you to achieve fitness and weight goals. Each class includes an exercise and lecture session. Participants must complete an application prior to attending orientation (completion and submittal are required for enrollment). The program offers weekly classes covering exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle modification, and structured exercise.

Stop the Yo-Yo: Sustaining Healthy Eating for the Long Haul
Friday, Jan. 14 from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.
This presentation will focus on the emotional and behavioral aspects of losing and maintaining weight loss—strategies for managing cravings and high risk situations. This program will highlight a strategy that uses mindfulness to cope with cravings based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). It will contain experiential exercises so that participants can practice the technique. The presentation will not contain recommendations about food choices other than to recommend avoiding extreme deprivation.

Presenter: Dr. Susan Head is a psychologist who has specialized in the treatment of compulsive eating and obesity since graduate school. She has published studies in peer reviewed scientific journals, and is often interviewed by the popular press. Dr. Head completed her internship at Duke University Medical Center and worked at the Duke Diet and Fitness Center (DFC) from 1991-1998. While at the DFC she directed the research program where she conducted studies on relapse prevention, success factors in long-term weight loss, impact of weight on quality of life, binge eating disorder, and night eating syndrome. Dr. Head also developed the relapse prevention and binge eating treatment programs at the DFC and started the first aftercare-counseling program to help clients stay on track after leaving the center. Since leaving Duke in 1998, Dr. Head has served as a consultant for other residential programs, redesigning their behavioral weight management components. In her private practice, she leads workshops and works with clients individually. Dr. Head is co-founder and partner of Imagine Weight Loss, LLC, a company based in Durham, NC, specializing in weight management and lifestyle consulting.

UNC Brain Injury Support Group
Wednesday, Jan. 19, 1 - 2 p.m.
The UNC Health Care Brain Injury Support Group meets on the third Wednesday of each month and is hosted and led by the UNC Department of Neurology. The UNC Brain Injury Support Group’s mission is to provide support, education, and advocacy for survivors of brain injury as well as for their families, friends, and caregivers.

UNC Caregivers’ Support Group
Wednesday, Jan. 26, 1 - 2 p.m.
Caring for loved ones with disabling health conditions can be rewarding but stressful. The UNC Caregivers’ Support Group provides support for family and professional caregivers. The group is facilitated and hosted by the UNC Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and offers an opportunity for participants to exchange information, talk about the challenges of being a caregiver, and provide support and encouragement to one another. The group meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at the UNC Wellness Center at Meadowmont in Chapel Hill, from 1 - 2 p.m. All caregivers are welcome.

Get Organized: A Family Affair

It is the beginning of a new year, but are you still working on your old resolution to get organized? If this goal is at the top of your list this year, come join the conversation regarding organization for families. Elisabeth Galperin, Professional Organizer and owner of Turn Leaf Organizing, will share tips, tricks and strategies to keep Mom, Dad & the kids better organized in 2011. This presentation will provide new and fresh ideas, realistic strategies, and show you budget-friendly tools & materials that can be used to “de-clutter” the entire family.

Presenter: Elisabeth Galperin is the owner of Turn Leaf Organizing, a professional organizing business here in the triangle area. For the past three years, she has been assisting home owners, small business owners, families & students gain control over their clutter & develop organizational and time management skills. As a member of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) and a nationally certified speech/language therapist, Elisabeth has meshed her training in the field of education and her skills in organization to offer a unique approach and perspective to organizing. Her company’s services include residential organizing (closets, kitchens, playrooms, garages) small business organizing (paper and electronic filing, time management) and individual consulting for adults and children with general organizing difficulties, attention-deficits, and/or learning disabilities. Her priority as a professional organizer is to assist & educate, so that her clients experience long-term, positive changes in their lives and environments.
