UNC Hospitals, Rex Healthcare, and Chatham Hospital honored with Stage 6 Recognition from HIMSS Analytics

UNC Hospitals, Rex Healthcare, and Chatham Hospital are now recognized as Stage 6 hospitals on the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS).

HIMSS developed the EMR Adoption Model in 2005 as a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals. There are eight stages (0-7) of recognition, with Stage 7 representing the most advanced electronic patient record environment.

As of November 2014, only 17 percent of the U.S. hospitals tracked by HIMSS have achieved Stage 6 recognition. There are now four UNC Health Care hospitals with Stage 6 recognition, as Pardee Hospital was already a Stage 6 hospital.

“I’m incredibly proud of our team in ISD and across UNC Health Care that helped us achieve Stage 6,” said Tracy Parham, RN, UNC Health Care’s Chief Information Officer. “Our goal is to provide the best care for our patients and best data for providers across North Carolina, and we look forward to extending the benefits of Epic@UNC and our connected clinical and business support systems across UNC Health Care in the near future.”

As Stage 6 hospitals, UNC Hospitals, Rex Healthcare, and Chatham Hospital are recognized by HIMSS for:

  • Making significant executive commitments and investments to reach this stage.
  • Appearing to have a significant advantage over competitors for patient safety, clinician support, clinician recruitment, and competitive marketing for both consumers and nurse recruitment.
  • Having almost fully automated/paperless medical records when they have implemented their IT applications across most of the inpatient care settings.
  • Starting to evaluate their data for care delivery process improvements or have already documented significant improvements in this area.
  • Making investments that are within reach of most hospitals and recognize the strategic value of improving patient care with the EMR.
  • Beginning to create strategic alignments with their medical staff to effectively utilize information technology to improve the patient safety environment
  • Being well-positioned to provide data to key stakeholders, such as payers, the government, physicians, consumers, and employers, to support electronic health record environments and health information exchanges.

“HIMSS Analytics congratulates UNC Hospitals, Rex Healthcare, and Chatham Hospital for leading the way toward health IT adoption,” said John Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, Executive Vice President, HIMSS Analytics. “Stage 6 represents a level of sophistication that only 934 US hospitals have reached to date.”
