Upcoming vaccine brand changes

UNC Health Care recently signed new contracts with both GlaxoSmithKline and Merck for vaccine purchases. To comply with the contracts, three vaccines currently purchased through the UNC Medical Center Department of Pharmacy will change to a different brand starting Oct. 1, or as soon thereafter as our current supply is depleted.

These changes apply both to inpatient and to outpatient clinic areas.

  • The ADACEL brand of Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Acellular Pertussis) will change to BOOSTIX (Tdap).
  • The HAVRIX brand of Pediatric Hepatitis A vaccine will change to VAQTA.  The adult brand will remain as Havrix.
  • The ENGERIX B brand of Pediatric Hepatitis B vaccine will change to RECOMBIVAX HB.  The adult brand will remain as Engerix B.

In each case, the CDC considers these products interchangeable. Patients who have started the vaccine series with one brand, can complete the series with the other brand.
