4 West to 6 West transition

Effective at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8, the patients and staff of 4 West will transfer to 6 West. This temporary move will facilitate a number of changes.

These changes include:

  • Increased numbers of available Observation/Transition patient beds from 12 on 4 West  to 16 on 6 West
  • Increased privacy and comfort for the patients and their families
  • The current telephone numbers, tube stations, printer IDs, etc., will remain unchanged on each respective unit
  • Allow for the renovation and installation of Privacy Panels in 4 West
  • An update will be provided regarding the return to 4 West once a definite timeline has been solidified

This is an evolving multidisciplinary process to better serve the patients of UNC Medical Center while maximizing the available resources of the organization. Just as 4 West currently operates, 6 West will be open 24/7 to help provide throughput for medical and surgery patients from numerous service teams. Operations of the other Emergency Services Transitions Units (G-NSH/ADU and 1-Anderson) will continue to function as normal.
