Dr. Tonges, who began as CNO in August 2002, led the Division of Nursing to a number of accomplishments during the past 13.5 years, including the development of its Professional Advancement System, the initiation of the Nursing Shared Governance structure, the implementations of both our Commitment to Caring and Carolina Care® initiatives, and our Magnet Designation in 2010 (and redesignation in 2015)! Dr. Tonges and our nursing team also were an essential part of UNC Hospitals being named #1 in patient-centeredness among all University HealthSystem Consortium Hospitals in both 2011 and 2013.

These accomplishments are more impressive given the growth of UNC Hospitals’ during her time as CNO – the N.C. Children’s and Women’s Hospitals’ opened just one year before she began as CNO, and Dr. Tonges’ leadership was essential to the planning and development of both the N.C. Cancer Hospital in 2009 and UNC Hospitals’ Hillsborough Campus in 2015.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Tonges and in wishing her the very best in retirement.
