Correct way of listing nursing credentials and email signatures

The Professional Development Council encourages you to use standard formatting when listing credentials or creating email signatures as an important way to represent ourselves professionally.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) brochure How to Display Your Credentials recommends that credentials be listed in a specific order. For the typical nurse without advanced degrees, it is reasonable to include (in this order):

  • Highest earned degree
  • Licensure
  • National Certification

Example: Sarah Wilson, BSN, RN, PCCN

In addition, our Marketing Department has published an Email Signature and Email Guidelines template for all employees. The template reads:

First Name Last Name| Your Title* (optional; please limit the number of titles used to one or two)
Your Department (optional)
Your Primary Work Location (e.g., UNC Hospitals, UNC REX Healthcare)
Your Facility Address, City, NC Zip Code (optional)
p (984)Your Phone Number | m (984) Your Mobile Number (optional)| f (919) Your Fax Number (optional)
Your Email address

The page also contains step-by-step instructions for how to create/update your signature in Outlook. You can copy the template directly from these instructions to have the preferred font. Please use this information to update your email signature and other documents.
