Rifkin to retire Feb. 1, 2019

Marlene Rifkin, Senior VP of Operations at UNC Hospitals, will retire on Feb. 1, 2019. Please join us in thanking Mrs. Rifkin for her incredible service and in congratulating her on a well-deserved retirement.

Mrs. Rifkin began her career at UNC in 1993 as Executive Director of Ambulatory Care for the Hospital and the School of Medicine and subsequently served in higher-level leadership roles as Sr. Vice President of Ambulatory Care Administration, Sr. VP of Children’s, Women’s and Cancer Services, and ultimately in her current role since 2009. As Senior VP of Operations, Mrs. Rifkin has been responsible for a number of key service lines and departments at the UNC Medical Center, including GI, Urology, McLendon Labs, Heart and Vascular, Neurosciences, Radiology/VIR, Epidemiology/Infection Control, Environmental Health & Safety, and Disaster Management, Emergency Preparedness and Business Continuity. She also holds System leadership roles for Laboratory Services and the Heart & Vascular service line (Board and Leadership Council). She is the Co-Chair of the Clinical Advisory Group for the Surgical Tower.

In addition to her tremendous accomplishments at work, Mrs. Rifkin also has served on the Board of Directors of multiple community institutions, including Carol Woods (Board of Directors and Charitable Trust), Ronald McDonald House, Orange County COMPASS Center for Women and Families. She was selected as a member of the Town of Chapel Hill’s 2020 Comprehensive Planning Committee, and also served as Executive Sponsor for the AHA Triangle Heart Walk in 2017 and was recognized as a Triangle Executive with Heart for the campaign.

In preparation for Ms. Rifkin’s retirement, her Medical Center responsibilities will be transitioned to Janet Hadar, MSN, MBA, Senior Vice President of Operations, and Ian Buchanan, MD, MPH, Senior Vice President of Operations. Janet will assume responsibility for Cardiac Services and McLendon Labs, while Ian will do so for Vascular, Neuroscience, GI, and Urology services as well as Radiology/VIR. 

Based on these changes, a new Vice President positon will be created that will report to Janet, and two new AVP positions will report to Ian. 

Additionally, Meghan McCann, RN, MSN, will be promoted to Vice President of Operations.
