Beacon Program Lecture Series is a three-part series that invites experts to come and share their knowledge. The final part of this series closes with a discussion about "Burnout and Secondary Traumatic Stress: A Trauma-focused Perspective on Working with Veterans". Our speaker is Elizabeth P. Marks, MSW, LCSW, who is a social worker with the Durham Veterans Affairs Health Care System.

Objectives of this discussion are:

  1. Understand the importance of cultural competence when working with veterans
  2. Identify common concerns providers have about working with Veterans, especially when addressing trauma
  3. Understand how doing trauma-focused work as a provider can contribute to burnout and secondary traumatic stress (STS)
  4. Understand the potential risk factors and impact on outcomes associated with burnout and STS
  5. Identify tools/resources useful in assessing burnout and STS and addressing self-care.
