Frequently Asked Questions

What are pillars?
The five “pillars” of UNC Health Care are People, Quality & Service, Growth, Value and Innovation.  They represent who we are and what our priorities are. These pillars are an extension of our culture and values, and support our mission and vision.

Why are pillars important?
The priorities of an organization show its culture and its character. The pillars People, Quality & Service, Growth, Value and Innovation are declarations of who we are and what make us different.  These words unite UNC Health Care both symbolically and practically.  They will guide us from our strategic planning and organizational goals all the way to our individual goals and work plans.

Who chose these pillars?
CEOs from every affiliate in UNC Health Care recommended these pillars and the unified approach. The pillars were finalized after much discussion and feedback from other leaders across the system.

Why are we doing this?
UNC Health Care has grown over the last few years, and as we grow, it’s important that as a system, we are unified in our direction and purpose.  The UNC Health Care pillars help unite us as we align our strategies, goals and operations under these key pillars.

What are we expected to do with them?
Each affiliate in UNC Health Care will integrate the pillars into their organizations as appropriate. Currently, most affiliates have some form of pillars already, so for them, it will be switching out what they currently have and incorporating the new ones.  We hope the pillars will serve as a framework for strategic decisions, prioritization and overall thinking about our work and how we do it.  With each affiliate using the same framework, this will help us move forward together as a system.

What about our own pillars/levers?
Most affiliates currently have pillars.  At Rex, they are called levers.  The old pillars/levers will go away and will be replaced with the pillars we are now introducing.
