UNC Medical Center Improvement Council established

Dr. William Roper, Dean of the UNC School of Medicine and CEO of UNC Health Care, has created a new UNC Medical Center Improvement Council to review performance data, set and measure goals, and manage resources related to health care quality improvement.

The Council’s members come from across the Medical Center – UNC Hospitals, UNC Faculty Physicians, and the UNC School of Medicine – and each is already actively engaged in our ongoing efforts to improve clinical care.  This group will work closely with the UNC Institute for Health Care Quality Improvement and with the UNC Hospitals Medical Staff Executive Committee to:  review performance data; establish and track Medical Center improvement goals with specific performance targets; and recommend how to prioritize and deploy dedicated improvement resources at the Medical Center.

The Improvement Council replaces the former Quality Council, which helped to oversee improvement work since 2007.  We are grateful to those who served on the Quality Council, and equally thankful to the thousands of Medical Center caregivers and other employees who continuously seek ways to improve clinical outcomes and patient safety, make care more efficient, and enhance the patient and family experience.  Together we have already achieved substantial and demonstrable changes in patient care over these past several years; we know that together we will continue to drive further improvement.

An executive committee will lead the Quality Council, including Dr. Tony Lindsey, Chief Medical Officer of UNC Hospitals, Dr. Michael Pignone, Director of the UNC Institute for Health Care Quality Improvement, and Dr. Brian Goldstein, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of UNC Hospitals, to represent the medical staff, the Institute for Health Care Quality Improvement, and clinical operations, respectively. The Improvement Council is accountable to Dr. Marschall Runge, Executive Dean for the School of Medicine, Gary Park, President of UNC Hospitals, and Dr. Allen Daugird, President of UNC Faculty Physicians.
