Our mission is to provide excellent patient care with an emphasis on improving the lives of our patients through education, patient support, close multidisciplinary collaborations and access to novel therapeutics via the Thurston Arthritis Research Center’s Clinical Trials Program.

The UNC Rheumatology Lupus Clinic provides a platform for Lupus clinical research in conjunction with the Thurston Arthritis Research Center. This clinic serves as a unique educational opportunity with a dedicated curriculum for UNC medical students, residents and rheumatology sub-specialty fellows. We are devoted to training the next generation of physicians to become experts in the management of this disease.

UNC Rheumatology Lupus Clinic Faculty:

Saira Z Sheikh, MD
Assistant Professor of Medicine

Dr. Sheikh is dual-trained in both Rheumatology and Allergy & Immunology, with areas of expertise in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and Inflammatory Arthritis. As an Allergist/Immunologist, she has additional expertise in the management of food allergy, urticaria and allergic rhinitis. She is also involved in the promotion of awareness about the critical importance of immunizations in patients with autoimmune disease or on biologic and other immunosuppressive therapies. She is Co-Director of the UNC Rheumatology Lupus Clinic and is Principal Investigator on numerous clinical trials in the areas of SLE and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). She is also actively involved in the education of medical students, residents and sub-specialty fellows.

Jennifer L Rogers, MD
Assistant Professor of Medicine

Dr. Rogers offers expertise in the areas of SLE, Inflammatory myopathies, and pulmonary manifestations of rheumatic disease. She has active collaborations with Barb Vilen PhD, UNC Division of Microbiology and Immunology, examining cellular processes involved in lupus flare and potential diagnostic biomarkers. She is Co-Director of the UNC Rheumatology Lupus Clinic and is Principal Investigator on numerous clinical trials in the areas of SLE. She is also actively involved in the education of medical students, residents and sub-specialty fellows.

Robert A.S. Roubey, MD
Associate Professor of Medicine

Dr. Roubey is a world renowned expert in the Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS), an autoimmune syndrome causing blood clots and miscarriages that may occur in association with SLE. A thought leader in this field, Dr. Roubey is a founding member and serves on the executive committee of APS ACTION, an international clinical trials consortium studying APS. His clinical practice of over 25 years focuses on SLE and APS. He is also actively involved in the education of medical students, residents, and sub-specialty fellows.
