Thomas Ivester, MD, MPH, Associate Professor in Maternal Fetal Medicine, has been selected as UNC Hospitals’ Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and VP of Medical Affairs (VPMA). Dr. Ivester will begin this appointment on April 24, 2017, and report to Gary Park, President of UNC Hospitals, with a matrix reporting relationship to Dr. Tony Lindsey, UNC Health Care’s Chief Medical Officer.


As CMO/VPMA, Dr. Ivester will provide clinical leadership and strategic direction for inpatient and outpatient services of UNC Hospitals and serve as a liaison between the hospital, the UNC School of Medicine, and UNC Faculty Physicians. Dr. Ivester will serve as a member of UNC Hospitals’ leadership team and have direct oversight over:

  • UNC Hospitals Medical Staff Affairs/Medical Staff Executive Committee
  • Designated Institutional Official/Graduate Medical Education Office
  • Medical Director and Service Leader Contracting and Performance Evaluation
  • Hospital Epidemiology

Dr. Ivester, who is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Maternal-Fetal Medicine, received his BS in Zoology at N.C. State University, obtained his MD from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, and completed his Fellowship at Columbia University and the Tennessee Health Sciences Center. He obtained his MPH at the Gilling’s School of Global Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill.
