UNC Medical Center, UNC REX, Nash, Pardee and Lenoir receive A grades

UNC Medical Center

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – April 29, 2021 – UNC Health is proud to announce that multiple affiliated hospitals have earned top “A” grades on the Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2021 hospital safety report card: UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, UNC REX Healthcare in Raleigh, Nash UNC Health in Rocky Mount, Pardee UNC Health in Hendersonville and UNC Lenoir Health in Kinston.

“Throughout the pandemic, our focus has remained steadfast: providing safe and excellent care for all of our patients,” said Dr. Wesley Burks, CEO of UNC Health. “We appreciate the Leapfrog recognition, which reflects the fact that our co-workers and physicians continue to work tirelessly to ensure that UNC Health is one of the top hospital systems in the country.”

Leapfrog’s hospital safety grades are a national distinction recognizing hospitals that protect patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. Leapfrog is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assigns an A-F grade to all general hospitals across the country and is updated every six months. It is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospitals’ prevention of medical errors and other harms to patients in their care.

“An ‘A’ safety grade is an elite designation that your community should be proud of,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “The past year has been extraordinarily difficult for hospitals, but UNC Health shows us it is possible to keep a laser focus on patients and their safety, no matter what it takes.”

For its Spring 2021 report card, Leapfrog graded more than 2,700 hospitals nationwide and about a third received an “A.”

UNC REX is the only hospital in North Carolina – and one of only 27 hospitals nationwide – to be awarded an “A” in every Leapfrog grading cycle since 2012. In December, Leapfrog also named UNC REX as one of the “Top Hospitals” nationwide for 2020.
