The Leapfrog Group assigns hospital grades to inform patients and improve safety.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Leapfrog Group has recognized multiple UNC Health hospitals with top “A” grades for patient safety in its latest report card: UNC Health Rex in Raleigh, UNC Health Johnston in Clayton, UNC Health Wayne in Goldsboro, UNC Health Nash in Rocky Mount, UNC Health Blue Ridge in Morganton and Appalachian Regional in Boone.

“UNC Health is committed to providing the safest care for all of our patients,” said Dr. Wesley Burks, CEO of UNC Health. “Leapfrog is one of the many metrics we use to gauge our progress and it provides us with valuable information to continually improve quality and patient safety. Across UNC Health, our clinical teams and hospital leaders share best practices and collaborate on ways to further our mission of improving the health of all North Carolinians.”

UNC Health Rex is one of only 22 hospitals nationwide, and the only hospital in North Carolina, to receive straight “A” grades since Leapfrog began its hospital safety reports in 2012.

“We are proud of our teammates and physicians for their ongoing dedication to patient safety and providing excellent care for our patients,” said Ernie Bovio, president of UNC Health Rex.

Leapfrog is an independent national watchdog organization that assigns letter grades to hospitals throughout the United States, based on a hospital’s ability to prevent medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public. Hospital Safety Grade results are based on more than 30 national performance measures and are updated each fall and spring.

“I applaud UNC Health’s leadership and workforce for their strong commitment to safety and transparency,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “An ‘A’ Safety Grade is a sign that hospitals are continuously evaluating their performance, so that they can best protect patients. Your hospital team should be extremely proud of their dedication and achievement.”
