In a joint effort to modernize our clinical data research infrastructure, UNC School of Medicine, NC TraCS Institute, and UNC Health have built the new Secure Health Informatics Research Environment (SHIRE). The SHIRE, going live on November 3, is a full-featured analytics platform designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of projects using data from UNC Health’s electronic health record.

An interdisciplinary team of UNC-Chapel Hill researchers from computational medicine, genetics, biostatistics, and surgery investigated how cell cycle flexibility allows tumor cells to escape the effect of anti-cancer drugs that target cell division. UNC Lineberger members Jeremy Purvis, PhD, professor of genetics, and Phillip Spanheimer, MD, assistant professor of surgery, led this study.

Led by scientists at UNC-Chapel Hill and UC-San Francisco, research reveals new non-coding genetic variants associated with Alzheimer’s disease functioning in microglia – brain cells already implicated in the progression of this often-fatal neurodegenerative condition. Yun Li, PhD, professor of genetics, is the lead UNC School of Medicine researcher.

Using a newly developed algorithm and a validation study, two labs in the UNC School of Medicine find that cancer hijacks a class of enzyme motif mutations to fuel tumorigenesis.

This virtual seminar series will provide a background in the use of machine learning tools to answer clinical questions, understand the strengths and limitations of these methods, and examine real-world examples of machine learning methodology in clinical research. The series is co-sponsored by the UNC Core Center for Clinical Research and the UNC Program for Precision Medicine in Health Care.

Led by Timothy Elston, PhD, and Chuck Perou, PhD, the university-wide program aims to advance personalized medicine for patients.
