Medical Alumni Association Council Meeting

Our Medical Alumni Association President, Dr. Wesley C. “Cas” Fowler III, has procured Dr. Matthew G. Ewend as our speaker for the Council meeting. The title of his talk will be, “Can Doctors Influence the Delivery of Health Care Anymore?” As many of you know Dr. Ewend was the former Chair of the UNC Neurosurgery Department and was chosen by Dean Wesley Burks to join his leadership team as Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) of UNC Health Care and President of UNC Physicians. In this role, he has responsibility for the overall physician enterprise of the UNC Health Care System, a statewide network of 13 hospitals and more than 3,200 employed physicians across 700 affiliated practices. In addition, he oversees the quality program, the value program, and the partnership of UNC Physicians with our hospitals.
We will also be hearing from Dean Burks’ office with an update on your School of Medicine. The Student Government Association Co-Presidents will share the happenings at the medical student level and there will also be a student panel, moderated by Dr. Georgette Dent, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, highlighting how our AMAZING medical students “pivoted” at the onset of COVID when MS1s were quarantined at home and there was not enough PPE for students on their scheduled clinical rotations. Dr. Lisa Rahangdale, Associate Dean for Admissions, will discuss the virtual medical school admissions process which was implemented this last year as well as share about our incoming UNC SOM Class of 2025.
