UNC Pharmacology Presents Brian Brown, PhD, Hosted by Brandon Pratt

Dr. Brian Brown is the Director of the Icahn Genomics Institute (IGI), Associate Director of the Precision Immunology Institute (PrIISM), Vice Chair of the Department of Immunology and Immunotherapy, and a Professor in the Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences and the Department of Dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Originally from Canada, Brian earned his BS degree in Biomedical Science from the University of Guelph, followed by a successful PhD in Pathology at Queen’s University. Dr. Brown then moved to Italy for his postdoctoral work at the Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy in the labs of Luigi Naldini and Maria Grazia Roncarolo. There, he contributed to major advancements in the field of gene therapy, including co-invention of the use of microRNA target sites (miRT) for targeting DNA, RNA, and virus-based drugs. Since starting his own lab, Dr. Brown has focused on identifying transcriptional programs regulating immune cell function both in steady state and in tumors and has led the generation of a microRNA expression and promoter/enhancer atlas of the mouse immune system as a member of the Immunological Genome Projectt. His many discoveries have been aided by numerous novel technologies pioneered by his lab. These include development of the first GFP-specific T cell mouse to interrogate T cell interactions with nearly any cell type, as well as development of a protein-level single-cell barcoding system that his lab used for the first in vivo spatially resolved functional genomics CRISPR screen for regulators of tumor growth, pathology, and immune recruitment in mouse models of lung cancer.
