90 Seconds With…, Episode 3: Forward Together: Diversity & Inclusion

May 14, 2019

Q: Why is Diversity and Inclusion an imperative for the strategic plan, Forward Together?

A: “It’s important because we serve the people of the state; we are here to give our best and our best has to reflect the people around us, so to know it’s an imperative in this current strategic plan, to me, show’s there’s a continued commitment from our Dean and our leadership.”

Q: How will a more diverse and inclusive environment enhance the UNC School of Medicine?

A: “I think that we all know that having a diverse group of people by way of cultural backgrounds, diversity of thought, in all the different ways that we can approach either a situation, a research question, a learning opportunity, or the care of a patient--- enhances who we are.”

Q: How can others help advance the School of Medicine’s diversity initiative?

A: We invite faculty and others to participate on our diversity council, in our diversity recruiting and retention activities for faculty, in our equity training, our unconscious bias training and other opportunities to engage.”

Q: Who are the leaders and key contributors of this imperative?

A: “As we’re all aware, we most unfortunately experienced the untimely loss of our Dean, Dr. Paul Godley. We are soon to begin a national search for his successor. In the meantime, I, myself, am personally investing lots of time and effort to ensure that the strategic plan priorities in diversity are accomplished. We have a fabulous team. Our office of inclusive excellence includes, Stephanie Brown and Hugh Smith. Also, we have diversity efforts led by Wendy Brewster, as chair of the Diversity Council and then we have people working on student diversity in a variety of our different programs as well.”
