Surgical Tower construction project begins this fall: Major impacts on pedestrian and vehicular access
Site preparations will begin in late September 2018 for the construction of UNC Hospitals’ Surgical Tower, a seven-story building to be built in front of NC Memorial Hospital. The Surgical Tower will offer enhanced space and features for our surgeons and staff, including modernized operating rooms, improved space for recovering patients, and more space for families and guests. When completed in 2022, the Surgical Tower will be the largest building on UNC Hospitals Chapel Hill campus at more than 330,000 square feet. Learn more about what to expect.

Limited / Restricted Access to Entering UNC Hospitals
As part of the 5 Children’s Protective Environment Unit Construction Project, a 500-ton crane and a 210-ton crane will arrive and be located at the Front Entrance of UNC Hospitals on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. The cranes will remain on-site throughout the entire weekend. Due to the 200-foot lift radius of the crane, there will be limited and restricted access upon arriving at UNC Hospitals.

Elevators W/C 10, 11, and 12 Closed
Plant Engineering has a 500-ton and a 210-ton crane arriving to UNC Hospitals on Friday – April 6, 2018 at 5 p.m. as part of the 5 Children’s Protective Environment construction project. The cranes will remain on-site the entire weekend. As a result, elevators W/C 10, W/C 11, and W/C 12 will be “Out Of Service” beginning Friday, April 6, at 11 p.m.

Physician Office Building to be named for Dean Jeffrey Houpt, MD
The UNC Physician Office Building, located adjacent to the North Carolina Cancer Hospital, will be renamed the Houpt Building in honor of Jeffrey L. Houpt, MD. Houpt served as Dean of the UNC School of Medicine and vice chancellor of medical affairs at UNC from 1996 until 2004. In 1998, when the UNC Health Care system was created by the North Carolina General Assembly, Houpt was appointed CEO.
