Garden named Chair of the Department of Neurology
Gwenn Garden, MD, PhD, has been named Chair of the UNC School of Medicine’s Department of Neurology, effective Aug. 19. Garden comes to UNC from the University of Washington where she currently serves as Vice Chair of the Department of Neurology.

Mackman awarded NIH grant to study pancreatic cancer tumors
Nigel Mackman, PhD, a member of the UNC McAllister Heart Institute and the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, has been awarded an NIH R01 entitled “Mechanisms of venous thrombosis in pancreatic cancer."

Oberlander Publishes NEJM Perspective on ACA
The Perspective article by UNC's Jonathan Oberlander, PhD, chair of the department of social medicine, argues that the Affordable Care Act "has produced important successes and transformed the health care landscape" and that any attempt to undo the ACA "is easier said than done."

Drop-in photo session for School of Medicine faculty and UNC Health Care APPs
There will be a free drop-in photography session for UNC School of Medicine faculty members and UNC Health Care advanced practice providers (AuDs, CRNAs, CNMs, CNSs, CPPs, LCSWs, NPs, OTs, PTs, PAs and SLPs) only in July. Non-faculty advanced practice providers must provide direct, clinical patient care in the outpatient setting in order to be photographed. As always, all UNC School of Medicine faculty members are welcome to attend. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate residents, fellows, program directors or other staff members at this session.

UNC School of Medicine seeks Director of Continuing Professional Development and Maintenance of Certification
The Director will provide direction and oversight for the continuing professional development (CPD) and maintenance of certification (MOC) efforts of the School of Medicine. This new position will be supported with 10% FTE by the Dean’s Office and in this capacity will report to the Executive Vice Dean and Chief Education Officer.
