Seven honored for furthering diversity at UNC

Oliver honored for service with Massey Award
Patricia Oliver, assistant dean for finance in the UNC School of Medicine, has been honored by UNC-Chapel Hill with a 2010 C. Knox Massey Distinguished Service Award, one of the most coveted distinctions Carolina bestows to faculty and staff.

NSICU runner-up for best nursing team in Southeast!
A simple number on an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper doesn’t necessarily mean anything. But for the Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit (NSICU) at UNC Hospitals, that number meant a great deal. The number, which ultimately grew to more than 450, was tacked on the wall in the NSICU break room and marked the number of days on the unit without a catheter-associated bloodstream infection (CA-BSI). The infection-free streak and the work put in by the NSICU team in the past several years also led to nationwide recognition.

Jacoway receives 2010 Elaine M. Hill volunteer of the year award
Everyone in Volunteer Services has a “Pat Jacoway story.” They all agree Jacoway has been a memorable and irreplaceable presence in volunteer services during the 32 years she’s been a hospital volunteer. So much so that she was honored with the 2010 Elaine M. Hill volunteer of the year award.

The scores are in. And they are very good. UNC Hospitals’ inpatient satisfaction scores rose to the 74th percentile in the University Healthsystem Consortium (UHC) database for the 2rd quarter of the 2010 fiscal year (October – December 2009). That means that our patients ranked our inpatient services more highly than 74 percent of our peers.

UNC researchers receive a grant to study the link between cancer and venous thrombosis
Nigel Key, MD and Nigel Mackman, PhD, have received a five-year, $1,986,650 grant to study the mechanisms of venous thromboembolism in cancer.

UNC graduate students winners at 2010 Global Venture Challenge
Andy Hemmert, Jon Edwards, and Ben Hill comprised the team of UNC graduate students who competed and won third place and a $5,000 cash prize to be split amongst them at the 4th Annual Global Venture Challenge. Hemmert and Edwards are graduate students in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics.
