Celeste Mayer, our Patient Safety Officer of 16 years, is retiring. Celeste has been a loyal member of our organizations for 31 years, and has been an outstanding contributor throughout her career. Celeste Mayer, our Patient Safety Officer of 16 years, is retiring. Celeste has been a loyal member of our organizations for 31 years, and has been an outstanding contributor throughout her career. As our first Patient Safety Officer, Celeste introduced many standards of a strong Patient Safety Culture program. She collaborated with physician and nurse leaders to design and implement our Adult and Pediatric Rapid Response teams and pilot our Brain Attack team. She has overseen eight Patient Safety Culture Surveys, contributing to our interest in and understanding of this important survey. She partnered with RTI and hospital leaders on an Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality funded grant to introduce TeamSTEPPS, and was instrumental in long-term sustainment of TeamSTEPPS. In 2008, along with a multidisciplinary team, Celeste participated in a NCHA Just Culture collaborative that lead to a change in policy and consistent change in management of behavioral choices. Along with Dr. Samantha Meltzer-Brody, Celeste piloted and launched the Peer Support program that has grown into the Integrated Emotional Support program. More recently, along with others, she has helped develop our Workplace Safety program. Celeste has also lead the way in standardizing our approach to the review of organizational accidents. Through the years, Celeste has served as our liaison to the Quality Center Patient Safety Organization and has been instrumental in regularly bringing Patient Safety leaders from all affiliate hospitals together to support one another and build strong patient safety programs together. Celeste has held an adjunct faculty position and has supervised many student nurse practicum projects, served on nurse master and doctoral committees and been a mentor to many. She leaves a long legacy as our stalwart for patient safety and a just culture!
