Christine Kistler, MD, MASc, has been named to the steering committee for a new NIH-funded trial on use of statins in preventing dementia, disability.
UNC Family Medicine’s Christine Kistler, MD, MASc, will serve on the steering committee for a new clinical trial funded by the NIH. The Pragmatic Evaluation of Events and Benefits of Lipid-Lowering in Older Adults, or PREVENTABLE trial, is expected to receive $90 million total in funding.
The trial will evaluate whether statins, or cholesterol-lowering drugs, can help prevent dementia and disability in adults over 75. It will also investigate whether statins can help against heart attacks and other cardiovascular-related deaths.
It will be the first major study of its kind, involving 20,000 participants from 60 hospitals.
Dr. Kistler serves as an associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine, with a focus on geriatric care. All four principal investigators on the trial hail from North Carolina institutions: Duke Medical Center and Wake Forest School of Medicine.
