UNC Health has named Tammy Scarborough of Michigan’s Beaumont Health to serve as president of its Statewide Region.

Chapel Hill, NC – The Statewide Region president directly supports UNC Health’s Chief Operating Officer as the chief executive over operations for the 14 UNC Health network hospitals outside of the Triangle region. In this role, statewide hospital presidents will report to Scarborough as they work in partnership to deliver outstanding care to the patients and others we serve across North Carolina. Scarborough will also have functional oversight of the UNC Health department of System Affiliations and Integration, and lead all prospective hospital affiliation activity within the region. The position is focused on driving effective implementation of the system-wide strategic and operational priorities within the Statewide Region and playing a primary role in the continued development and implementation of the rural health care strategy.

In this role, Scarborough will be accountable for statewide hospital performance, with a focus on improving quality, clinical outcomes, employee experience, and patient satisfaction. She will partner with UNC Health system-wide leaders over Ambulatory / Post-Acute Services, UNC Physicians Network, and the UNC School of Medicine to operationalize system ambulatory strategy and provision of physician services within the region. Scarborough will also collaborate heavily with Triangle-area leaders to coordinate clinical and administrative operations between UNC Health’s Statewide and Triangle regions. She will start at UNC Health in early May.

Scarborough comes to UNC Health with more than 13 years of healthcare management experience. Most recently, she served as Beaumont Health’s southern region market president with responsibility for operations and clinical oversight of hospitals within the region and all related ambulatory / surgical services centers. As president, she has been accountable for achieving top decile outcomes in safety, quality of care, and service while continuously improving patient and family centered care. She has been responsible for setting business strategy for the acute care and ambulatory campuses in the region.

“We’re extremely pleased to have Tammy join the UNC Health team,” said Chief Operating Officer Steve Burriss. “We believe her broad experience in large healthcare systems positions her perfectly for this extremely important role. Our relationship with our partners in UNC Health’s Statewide Region is critically important, and we are confident Tammy will excel in this leadership position.”

Prior to her work with Beaumont Health, Scarborough served as president of ambulatory care and clinical service lines for Summa Health System. There, she participated in the development and implementation of a $50 million turnaround in 2017, developed and led growth initiatives resulting in a 2% market share increase, and designed and developed new ambulatory centers.

Scarborough’s career also includes work with Akron Children’s Hospital and University of Toledo Physicians. She holds an MBA from DePaul University in Chicago.
