Leapfrog awards top grades to multiple UNC Health hospitals in its Fall 2023 report.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Several hospitals affiliated with UNC Health earned top grades for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group in its Fall 2023 hospital report cards.

Leapfrog awarded top “A” grades to UNC Health Rex in Raleigh, UNC Health Johnston in Clayton, UNC Health Pardee in Hendersonville, UNC Health Wayne in Goldsboro and UNC Health Appalachian in Boone.

“Patient safety is always a top priority at all UNC Health hospitals and clinics,” said Dr. Wesley Burks, CEO of UNC Health. “This sort of recognition happens because of our teammates’ unwavering commitment to provide safe and high-quality care for all of our patients.”

Rex is one of only 18 hospitals nationwide – and the only hospital in North Carolina – to earn straight “A’s” since Leapfrog began grading hospitals in 2012.

“Rex is routinely recognized as one of the top hospitals in North Carolina and we are proud of the excellent care we provide patients from across Eastern North Carolina,” said Ernie Bovio, president of UNC Health Rex.

Several other UNC Health hospitals earned “B” grades, including UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, UNC Health Caldwell in Lenoir, UNC Health Johnston in Smithfield and UNC Health Nash in Rocky Mount.

Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program exclusively based on hospital prevention of medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day nationally. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually in the fall and spring.
