Endocarditis Increases in N.C.
While the opioid epidemic has prompted news coverage of overdose deaths and increases in HIV and viral hepatitis infections, one side effect of injection drug use has been largely absent from the headlines. Rates of drug-associated endocarditis have been increasing over the past decade and rapidly rising over the past five years. In North Carolina, the number of hospitalizations and the number of surgeries to treat this infection of the heart’s valves have soared.
