Health Humanities Grand Rounds with Emily Silverman

“The Power of the Voice: Storytelling, Medicine, and The Nocturnists”

Storytelling is at the heart of medicine. In this presentation, Dr. Silverman will describe the origins and impact of her acclaimed medical storytelling live show and podcast, The Nocturnists, and show us how finding our voices as clinicians can help promote authenticity, mitigate burnout, and create joy and community.

Emily Silverman, MD is an internal medicine physician at UCSF and creator/host of The Nocturnists, an acclaimed medical storytelling live show and podcast which aims to augment clinician wellbeing and transform medical culture. She has published writing in The New York Times, The Virginia Quarterly Review, JAMA, CHEST, and The Examined Life Journal, and is currently working on a book with the support of a fellowship from MacDowell. She lives in San Francisco with her husband and daughter.
