The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has funded four multi-university cooperative research centers to develop vaccines for chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea. Toni Darville, MD, is the principal investigator on one of them through a grant for up to $10.7 million.

Thomas Jr. Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery, was honored with the 12th Annual Women Leaders in Medicine Award from the American Medical Student Association. Kibbe was nominated by Perry Tsai, MD, PhD, National President of the American Medical Student Association and recent MD and PhD graduate from the UNC School of Medicine.

Anil Kishin Gehi, MD, associate professor of medicine in the division of cardiology, has been awarded the Sewell Family-McAllister Distinguished Professorship in Electrophysiology. The professorship is designed to recognize an outstanding clinician, teacher, and scholar, who is a leader in the field of electrophysiology, from the division of cardiology and the UNC McAllister Heart Institute.

The UNC Department of Emergency Medicine received its first and second R01 grants last week. Dr. Tim Platts-Mills received a grant to conduct a clinical trial of a shared decision making intervention to improve pain management in older adults; Dr. Michelle Meyer received an award to study stiffening of the arteries as a risk factor for end-organ damage to the brain among Hispanic and Latino adults.
