It is with great pleasure that we announce that our Medicine Progressive Care Unit (MPCU) has recently been awarded Gold-level Beacon Award designation by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN). The MPCU joins the ranks of CTICU, CICU and SICU at UNC Hospitals as recipients of this prestigious award, and is the first of our intermediate care units to achieve this distinction.

Congratulations to the MPCU!

Please join us in congratulating our MPCU colleagues in this wonderful and outstanding achievement!

The American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) created the Beacon designation to recognize individual units that have set a path to excellence in an effort to highlight critical care units that distinguish themselves in every facet of patient care.

For patients and families, Beacon designation signifies exceptional care through improved outcomes and satisfaction. For nurses working in Beacon units, the designation means a positive and supportive work environment with greater collaboration between colleagues and leaders, higher morale and lower turnover.

Recognizing that there are different levels of excellence, Beacon designation is stratified into three rankings – gold, silver and bronze. Recipients of a Gold Beacon designation demonstrate excellence in sustained unit performance and patient outcomes. Congratulations again to everyone in our MPCU!
