The Academic Coaches will work with students in the Carolina EXCEL program providing small group facilitation and academic coaching in the foundational sciences for a group of 5 students enrolled in the Carolina EXCEL program which would begin in the Summer of 2021. EXCEL is a newly launching year-long pipeline program for under-represented in medicine students to prepare them to excel in medical school.

Applicants must have an active paid appointment with the UNC SOM and must have buyout time available for the support

The Academic Coaches will work with students in the Carolina EXCEL program providing small group facilitation and academic coaching in the foundational sciences for a group of 5 students enrolled in the Carolina EXCEL program which would begin in the Summer of 2021. EXCEL is a newly launching year-long pipeline program for under-represented in medicine students to prepare them to excel in medical school. Until the start of the EXCEL program, the Academic Coaches will work as part of the UNC Office of Academic Excellence (OAE) to coach medical students during the Foundation Phase. During that time coaches would learn about the medical school curriculum and how to coach students.

The ideal candidate will be an MD with a demonstrated interest and performance in medical education, an eagerness to learn, and prior experience with tutoring and/or teaching. He or she will work directly with the EXCEL leadership (Claudis Polk, O’Reese Knight, Neva Howard) and with the OAE (specifically training and working with Christina Shenvi and Neva Howard).

– Duties and expectations with the OAE (until summer 2021):

– Attend twice-monthly OAE team meetings on Thursday mornings

Coach MS1 and MS2 students in the foundational sciences in study skills, mindset, and how to be successful using principles of learning theory. Coaches will receive training from the OAE on learning theory and how to coach students.  Coaches would be expected to meet with at least 10 students per week on average.

Duties and expectations with Carolina EXCEL (starting summer 2021):

– Facilitate 3 weekly 2-hour small group session covering foundational science material in a case-based format

– Participate in meetings with the Carolina EXCEL leadership committee
