UNC Lineberger’s Joshua Zeidner, MD, reported preliminary data at the 60th American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting from a phase II clinical trial for administering a high-dose of the chemotherapy treatment cytarabine followed by an immune checkpoint inhibitor, pembrolizumab, in patients with acute myeloid leukemia that had relapsed or no longer responded to other treatment.

A celebration honoring Dr. Bright will be held Friday, December 14 from 4 – 6 p.m. in the Bondurant Hall lobby. The entire UNC SOM community is invited to attend. The Craver Medical Student Teaching Award was established by UNC School of Medicine graduate Joseph M. Craver, MD, to honor outstanding teachers in internal medicine, pediatrics, and surgery who inspire and change the lives of medical students through their teaching.

Physician Leadership in Quality and Safety Scholarly Concentration is designed for 4th year medical students with an interest in quality improvement in healthcare. Students work closely with a mentor on a quality improvement project over the course of a year and present their findings at an annual symposium.

Ross Boyce, MD, MSc, a clinical instructor in the division of infectious diseases, has been awarded a nearly $1-million Career Development Award (K23) from the National Institutes of Health to utilize principles from criminology to map mosquito breeding sites in Western Uganda. The project could increase the efficiency of vector control in the region.

In a study published in the journal NPJ Breast Cancer, researchers led by Charles Perou, PhD, and Melissa Troester, PhD, reported they used a form of artificial intelligence called machine learning, or deep learning, to train a computer to identify certain features of breast cancer tumors from images.
