New research by the lab of Jessica Thaxton, PhD, MsCR, in the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology at the UNC School of Medicine and colleagues in the Immunotherapy Group at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, has unveiled new clues behind T-cell metabolism that could enhance immunotherapies that rely on T cells to fight cancer.

An interdisciplinary team of UNC-Chapel Hill researchers from computational medicine, genetics, biostatistics, and surgery investigated how cell cycle flexibility allows tumor cells to escape the effect of anti-cancer drugs that target cell division. UNC Lineberger members Jeremy Purvis, PhD, professor of genetics, and Phillip Spanheimer, MD, assistant professor of surgery, led this study.

Eric Wallen, MD, professor of urology at the UNC School of Medicine and a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, is co-leading the effort to improve diagnostic and health outcomes for all North Carolinians with prostate cancer, including Black men and Native Americans, who are disproportionately affected.

A new study published by UNC Family Medicine’s Sarah Kowitt, PhD, MPH, and colleagues looked at the impact of different types of warning signs for large and premium cigars sold individually at the point of sale. The team’s newly developed graphic and text warnings were more effective than the FDA’s proposed text-only warnings and could potentially increase the effectiveness of warning signs for large and premium cigars.
