Li Qian, PhD, associate professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and associate director of the McAllister Heart Institute, has received the prestigious Emerging Investigator Award from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a part of the NIH. The award includes $6.5 million in funding over seven years.

Kaplan, a fourth-year student in the School of Medicine and recent graduate of the Gillings School of Global Public Health, has published an op ed about telehealth as a tool for expanding access to care and promoting health equity.

The Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering program invests in future leaders who have the freedom to take risks, explore new frontiers in their fields of study, and follow uncharted paths that may lead to groundbreaking discoveries. Twenty recipients will receive individual grants of $875,000 distributed over five years.

Cindy Gay, MD, is leading the phase III clinical trial of the promising COVID-19 vaccine candidate for the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Medical Center. Gay also leads the UNC Moderna vaccine phase III clinical trial. (Update: these clinical trials are no longer enrolling participants.)

Greg Scherrer, PhD, associate professor in the UNC Department of Cell biology and Physiology and member of the UNC Neuroscience Center, will use the three-year, $300,000 grant to study the neural basis of pain.

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The overarching goal of this NHGRI R25 program is to support educational activities that encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to pursue further studies or careers in research.

The overarching goal of this NHGRI R25 program is to help recruit individuals with specific specialty or disciplinary backgrounds to research careers in biomedical, behavioral and clinical sciences. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) will support innovative educational activities with a primary focus on Research Experiences.

Using a custom-built exposure chamber, UNC School of Medicine and EPA scientists tested consumer-grade masks and improvised face coverings to show how effective they can be at protecting individuals from airborne particles of similar size to those carrying SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
