Motivated by the increasing incidence of COVID-19 cases in North Carolina and the CDC's modified recommendation for individuals to wear protective face coverings, Dr. Kathleen Marulanda (PGY-5, Dept. of Surgery) quickly acknowledged the challenge this would pose for some in the community, particularly African American men.

Leigh Callahan, PhD, is a co-author on the first research paper to quantify -- on a state-by-state basis -- the number of physically inactive people with arthritis who could reduce their anxiety and depression through exercise. The study showed that more than 3 million people could benefit from exercise, and provides particularly useful insights when the data are broken down to a state level.

In the past, cochlear implants were employed in people with severe hearing loss, improving their ability to hear the conversations around them. But now, research shows that these devices offer benefits to patients with mild or moderate hearing loss – a group that UNC researchers and doctors are soliciting to receive cochlear implants as part of ongoing clinical trials.

In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, many faculty in the School of Medicine (SOM) were tasked with restructuring courses and content for medical students to ensure they could effectively finish their semesters. A true testament to how the SOM community is better when working together is the creation and implementation of the Medical Management of COVID-19 elective for medical students, created by Drs. Stephen P. Bogdewic and Sarah Smithson, and Johanna Foster.
