Kim Boggess, MD, Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, has been named Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs within the UNC School of Medicine’s Office of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development (FALD).
In this role, Boggess will be responsible for oversight of the appointments, promotion, and tenure process, recruitment and retention of key faculty, the development and implementation of career development programming, and the execution of multiple aspects of the UNC School of Medicine’s Strategic Plan Forward Together, including optimizing mentoring across the School, programs meant to advance women in faculty leadership, and increasing support for fixed-term faculty.
In this role, Boggess will report to Julie Byerley, MD, MPH, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs. An internal search for a Senior Associate Dean for Leadership Development within FALD was paused due to COVID-19, but will resume shortly.
The mission of the Office of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development is to support the professional and personal development of UNC School of Medicine faculty at all levels. These efforts have continued through the COVID-19 pandemic, including the development of resources such as peer and executive coaching and guidance on providing high quality teaching during the pandemic.
Boggess has been a member of the UNC School of Medicine faculty since 1999. Boggess’ clinical focus is high risk pregnancy and critical care obstetrics. She has a special interest in the impact of oral disease on pregnancy outcomes, and was the first investigator to report an association between maternal periodontal infection and preeclampsia. Her currently funded research focuses on optimal management of pregnancies complicated by diabetes and hypertension.
Over the course of her career at the UNC School of Medicine, Boggess has established an extensive track record as a leader and mentor to numerous students, residents, fellows and faculty. As Program Director for two NIH-funded K-level training programs, Boggess has supported the career development of faculty from across UNC’s Health Affairs schools.
She serves as a UNC IRB Chairperson, presiding over monthly meetings to consider research applications from across the campus. Within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology she has also served on the Department’s Promotion and Tenure Committee as well as the Finance Committee.
