UNC Department of Radiology is pleased to name Carolina Guimaraes, MD, as the new Chief of Pediatric Radiology. Additionally, Lane Donnelly, MD, and spouse of Dr. Guimaraes, will also be joining the UNC School of Medicine as Executive Medical Director of Pediatric Population Health and Quality for UNC Health. He will also serve as Director of UNC Children’s Quality. Drs. Guimaraes and Donnelly will join us from Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University School of Medicine.
The Department of Radiology is pleased to announce that following a National Search, they have selected Carolina Guimaraes, MD, as the new Division Chief of Pediatric Radiology. Dr. Guimaraes is currently Associate Professor of Radiology at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University School of Medicine. Additionally, Lane Donnelly, MD, and spouse of Dr. Guimaraes, will also be joining the UNC School of Medicine as Executive Medical Director of Pediatric Population Health and Quality for UNC Health. He will also serve as Director of UNC Children’s Quality.
Dr. Guimaraes earned her medical degree from the Universidade de Caxias do Sul, Brazil. She then completed her Diagnostic Radiology residency at the Hospital Mae de Deus in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and completed her fellowships in Pediatric Radiology Research, Pediatric Radiology, and Pediatric Neuroradiology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
Following her training, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center recruited Dr. Guimaraes to join their faculty. Throughout her career, she has also served on the faculty at Nemours Children’s Hospital / University of Central Florida College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital / Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Guimaraes’s research interests lie within pediatric neuroradiology, including fetal and neonatal imaging. Aside from her clinical work, she is also interested in quality improvement and education. She has led numerous quality improvement efforts throughout her career and given many didactic lectures locally, nationally, and internationally. Dr. Guimaraes serves on the Interesting Case Committee for the American Society of Pediatric Neuroradiology (ASPNR), News and Updates Committee for the American Society of Pediatric Neuroradiology (ASPNR), Fundraising Committee for the American Society of Pediatric Neuroradiology (ASPNR) and as a volunteer neuroradiologist reader for the World Federation of Pediatric Radiology (WFPR). She also served the Neuroradiology Committee for the Society of Pediatric Radiology (SPR) and the Fetal Committee for the Society of Pediatric Radiology (SPR). She is one of the recipients of the 2020 Anne G. Osborn ASNR International Outreach Professor for the American Society of Neuroradiology.

Dr. Donnelly is Professor of Radiology and Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. He currently serves as Chief Quality Officer and the Christopher G. Dawes Endowed Director of Quality at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and an Associate Dean and Co-Executive Director of Stanford Medicine Center for Improvement in the Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Donnelly earned his medical degree, completed his Diagnostic Radiology residency and Pediatric Radiology fellowship at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Former Leadership positions include Radiologist-in-Chief and Frederic N. Silverman Chair of Pediatric Radiology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (2002-2011); Inaugural Chief Medical Officer / Physician-in-Chief at the Nemours Children’s Hospital; and Chief Quality Officer for Hospital Based Services at Texas Children’s Hospital (2015-2017).
