The School of Medicine is moving HeelStream recordings to UNC Panopto this spring.

Last spring, Panopto, UNC’s lecture capture recording service, purchased Ensemble Video, the company behind our School of Medicine (SOM) HeelStream streaming media service. Because of this, we are migrating all HeelStream recordings to UNC Panopto during spring 2022.
Many of the UNC Panopto benefits include:
- Similar features for managing, sharing, and embedding recordings
- Automatic transcription and closed captioning
- A feature-rich video and transcription editor
Key dates and steps to be aware of during the migration:
- Migration of HeelStream recordings is scheduled to run January 18 – April 29, 2022.
- Migration will occur in the background and will not affect your embedded and linked HeelStream content.
- Once migration begins, any new videos will need to be uploaded into Panopto. You can request a Panopto folder by visiting visit our Classroom Support home pageand clicking the Request Help
- Once migration is complete, there are a few steps each HeelStream library Contributor will need to perform before we switch to Panopto.*
- Afterward, all HeelStream URL links and embed codes will be redirected to the migrated content in Panopto.
- Eventually, you will need to change your HeelStream URL links and embed codes to Panopto’s. This timeline is yet to be determined, but will be announced in advance to allow time for making these changes.
*We encourage all HeelStream Library Contributors and Admins to sign up for one of our migration training sessions on our SOM IT Training site. Trainings are scheduled December – February and will cover the post-migration steps you need to perform and how to manage your recordings in Panopto.
Please Note: As with HeelStream, no patient Protected Health Information (PHI) can be included in UNC Panopto recordings.
