UNC Hospitals leadership has awarded the Department of Family Medicine’s Jen Martini, MD, the Medical Staff Physician Excellence Clinician of the Year Award.
“This new award is a prestigious honor that recognizes a UNC physician who most embodies the qualities of a truly great patient service provider, including technical skill, humanism to patients and families, collaboration with colleagues, and advocacy,” Family Medicine Chair Margaret Helton, MD, said. “Nominations were submitted by peers and reviewed by the selection committee, with decisions based on both the strength and number of nominations, as well as performance with respect to quality care metrics. Martini was selected as the recipient of this award out of over 1,500 UNC faculty physicians at UNC Hospitals. The committee was impressed by the nominating letters, and even a PowerPoint presentation, from 10 peers that highlighted the extraordinary efforts she makes on behalf of her patients and the passion she displays in her work. Her advocacy for her patients’ medical needs and her understanding of how social determinants influence overall health were recognized. She is not only an advocate for her patients but also ensures that learners feel valued, heard and respected, and ensures that her clinical teaching is evidence-based. She integrates principles of increasing equity in every sphere of her work. Her patients absolutely adore and appreciate her, and many comment on her empathic listening and genuine care balanced with her medical knowledge and clinical expertise. That Martini was selected as the final winner of the award is a testament to the wide respect she has earned in our department and throughout the hospital. She makes a real difference in the lives of our patients and their families.”
The other finalists for the Medical Staff Physician Excellence Clinician of the Year Award were Dr. Ben Haithcock, Cardiothoracic Surgery; Dr. Chris Sayed, Dermatology; Dr. Dena Williams, Neurology; and Dr. Bob Esther, Orthopedic Surgery.
