The UNC Department of Family Medicine has launched UNC Health’s first private practice–based Primary Care Behavioral Health Collaborative, embedding mental health services into primary care to improve access, reduce stigma, and enable earlier intervention across the lifespan. Based at UNC Health Family Medicine & Pediatrics at East Pittsboro, the initiative is supported by generous donor funding.

The society recognizes distinguished academic leaders, educators, and researchers whose contributions have earned national and international acclaim.

In a joint effort to modernize our clinical data research infrastructure, UNC School of Medicine, NC TraCS Institute, and UNC Health have built the new Secure Health Informatics Research Environment (SHIRE). The SHIRE, going live on November 3, is a full-featured analytics platform designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of projects using data from UNC Health’s electronic health record.

A decade after winning the Nobel Prize, the UNC professor continues to push the boundaries of discovery while inspiring the next generation and building cultural bridges between the United States and Türkiye.

UNC-Chapel Hill Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences Dr. Stephanie Sjoblad was recently awarded the Outstanding Educator Award from the American Academy of Audiology. The award is given by asking colleagues, friends, and mentees in their professional circles to nominate colleagues who deserve recognition for outstanding service to audiology and the hearing sciences.

Dr. Joe Grisham passed away on January 29th, 2025. Dr. Grisham was the Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine from 1973-1999. He oversaw the creation of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory medicine, along with Bill McLendon, conducted impactful NIH research in liver pathology, and was a recipient of the American Society of Investigative Pathology’s highest honor, the Gold-Headed Cane Award.

Led by Kathleen Caron, PhD, UNC School of Medicine researchers earned a Sprint for Women’s Health Award to develop a new therapeutic approach to treating debilitating migraines that affect women.

Leading Transformation in Academic Medicine (LTAM), which provides leadership and career development opportunities, welcomes the 2024-2025 cohort.

Headspace, the popular wellness app, is available to UNC Health Employees, a partnership highlighted in a two-part episode of the TarHeal Wellness podcast exploring the partnership and available resources, including evidence-based meditation and mindfulness tools, mental health coaching, therapy, psychiatry, and family support.

The Academy of Educators, housed within the School of Medicine’s Office of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development, has recognized 27 faculty and trainee members with teaching awards.
