The Code Sepsis team is very grateful to the following 'Sepsis Stars' that strive to improve patient care through their participation in the sepsis initiative. The sepsis initiative is working to improve timely recognition of potential sepsis and implement the entire care bundle including a lactic acid, blood cultures, IV antibiotics, and IV fluids. This week, the Code Sepsis Team is happy to recognize Tara McCoy, Liz Tallum, Ben Stille for excellent triage and teamwork when they applied appropriate sepsis treatment for an ED septic shock patient.

Site preparations will begin in late September 2018 for the construction of UNC Hospitals’ Surgical Tower, a seven-story building to be built in front of NC Memorial Hospital. The Surgical Tower will offer enhanced space and features for our surgeons and staff, including modernized operating rooms, improved space for recovering patients, and more space for families and guests. When completed in 2022, the Surgical Tower will be the largest building on UNC Hospitals Chapel Hill campus at more than 330,000 square feet. Learn more about what to expect.

The systematic review led by UNC’s Rachel Peragallo Urrutia, MD, was published this week in Obstetrics and Gynecology. It reviewed 53 studies of the effectiveness of fertility awareness-based methods and rated the studies for their quality.

The Stuff the Bus campaign collects school supplies for children in need in Orange, Wake and now Johnston County schools. Supplies will be collected between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., Friday, Aug. 10. Donations for Orange County Schools may be made in front of the NC Women's Hospital. Donations for Wake County Schools may be made in the lot adjacent to the UNC REX Patient Tower entrance.

Dan Jonas, MD, MPH, associate professor of medicine and deputy director for research at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, found that using electrocardiography in screening asymptomatic adults for cardiovascular disease may cause more harm than good.

In the journal Cancer Immunology Research, scientists led by UNC Lineberger’s Yuliya Pylayeva-Gupta, PhD, revealed that a molecule called interleukin-35 plays a role in suppressing cancer-fighting immune cells in pancreatic cancer.
